Walking bass for guitar (8)

When you walk for chords with a major 3rd (Dominant 7ths and majors), and you want to arrive at the I chord by halfstep, then the "rules" for walking suffer a breakdown. Following the scalewise or stepwise movement that we've done so far to make our bass lines walk, we end up with a flat 3rd on the the 3rd beat. There are many bassists who play this line and it seems to work. Personally I do not like to mix major 3rds with flat 3rds in the bass when dominant or major chords are sounding. That flat 3rd to my ear pulls to a minor sound and the foundation of the chord is weakened.

The solution that works best for me is to play the flat 2nd on beat 2 followed by the natural 2 on beat 3 and then the major 3rd on beat 4 and you're into the root of the I chord. The flat 2 falls on a weak beat and though it's not part of the scale tones that are available for a walking line it moves by half step to the natural 2nd. Try them both and use whichever works for you.
